Founded in 2002, the Sichuan Symphony Orchestra is a provincial government-funded public arts institution of remarkable stature and which occupies a central place in Western China. Its components are a full symphony orchestra, a traditional Chinese music ensemble, and a professional chamber choir. Since its establishment, the Sichuan Symphony Orchestra has been active on the concert stage interpreting major Chinese and foreign works of music. It has given thousands of concerts of various genres - including full-scale symphonic concerts, fully-staged operatic productions, and concerts of traditional Chinese music, choral music as well as chamber music.
In recent years, the Sichuan Symphony Orchestra has undergone complete and total reform according to international practice and standards. On 19 December 2016, it was announced that world-renowned conductor Darrell Ang (Chinese name:洪毅全) will take up position as the orchestra's first Artistic Director & Chief Conductor under its new guise. Winner of the 50th Besançon International Conductors’Competition, the 7th Arturo Toscanini International Competition, and the 10th Antonio Pedrotti International Competition, this is Ang’s first position with a Chinese symphony orchestra. Since then, the Sichuan Symphony Orchestra has endeavoured to strive for international prominence while establishing strong roots in the local Sichuanese community.
As a major arts institution located in the west of China, the Sichuan Symphony Orchestra is poised to make its mark in its home country as well as nurturing ambitions in joining the ranks of international ensembles as it enters a new era. Most of its members and performers are graduates of top universities and conservatories worldwide (such as the Hochschule für Musik and Universität der Künste in Berlin, Curtis Institute, Yale University, New England Conservatory of Music, Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, Harvard University, etc.) as well as from the top schools in China, and possess distinguished Masters and/or Postgraduate degrees in Instrumental Performance. In 2018, the orchestra's first Artist-in-Residence was announced: famous Chinese pianist Zuo Zhang ("Zee Zee") was distinctive in taking on this mantle.
The orchestra has worked with many international artists, such as conductors En Shao, Shinik Hahm and Josep Caballé-Domenech, pianists Seong-Jin Cho, Alexandra Dariescu and Anna Tsybuleva, violinists Mikhail Simonyan, Liya Petrova and Andrei Baranov, violist and ARD Prize-winner Mei Diyang, cellists Qin Liwei and Camille Thomas, trumpeter Timur Martynov (Principal, Mariinsky Orchestra), oboist Olivier Doise (Principal, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France), and guitarist Pablo Villegas-Sainz, among others.
The orchestra attaches great importance to the creation of original compositions by Chinese composers. Recent commissions such as the symphonic suites "The Kindness of Peoples Flows Like Water" and "Red Monument" were selected and supported in 2016 and 2018 respectively by the National Arts Foundation Fund. Then, in October 2020 a full-scale opera, "A Hero's Story", was commissioned and successfully staged at Beijing's National Center for the Performing Arts to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the People's Liberation Army, achieving untold success and rave critical reviews. Recently, the large-scale symphony "Lighthouse" received the 2020-2021 "Symphony of Our Time" Creation Fund of the Culture and Tourism Bureau.
Since 2018, the Sichuan Symphony has embarked on projects focusing on international cooperation and exchanges with foreign institutions. The orchestra received such distinguished guests as the orchestra of the Teatro Carlo Felice di Genoa in Italy, the Philharmonic Orchestra of Łodz in Poland, as well as young musicians from New Zealand's Victoria University, the University of Melbourne and the Sydney Conservatory of Music in Australia.
Single-minded in its purpose of "Mastering a universal language in order to tell the world about China", as well as becoming "The Voice of Sichuan", the Sichuan Symphony Orchestra will continue to develop, innovate and integrate; present new adventures with each symphonic season; inspire audiences everywhere through its touring activities; lead the vanguard for new music with the commissioning of original works; set an example of excellence through its education and training activities, and - last but not least - to popularize and promote the elegant artform we all know as "Music".
